For well read Bible believing Christians it can be rather disturbing to watch "religious" programming on television these days. I say this because it seems as if the subject matter covered by many "teachers" is heavy on God making you happy, successful, and healthy.
On a few of the "religious" cable networks there is a heavy emphasis on what is called the prosperity Gospel. This is a kind of give(to the preacher) and get rich in return. Plant your seed (money to their ministry) and you will receive a ten fold harvest.
The sad reality is this, there is precious little solid Bible teaching on television these days.
Sure, these TV preachers can cherry pick verses out of context to validate the most heretical of views, but, a person who knows their Bible will recognize a lie a mile away.
Here is what I discovered over the years: avoid reading all the free literature provided by ministries, sects and TV evangelists. Your time would be better spent reading the Bible and praying.I found that many ministries inundate gullible readers with literature that promotes their faulty interpretation of Scripture. The Jehovah's Witnesses and the off-shoots of the original Worldwide Church of God readily come to mind.
If you think you need a Bible commentary to help you in your studies, pick one by the greats of the past like Matthew Henry or A.W.Tozer.
In closing I ask this: is it possible to be a Christian living in a country such as America or Britain and be Biblically ignorant because he or she doesn't read the Bible?
I could be wrong but I tend to think it isn't. I think this because Our Lord says 'narrow is the gate that leads to (eternal) life'.There are many other passages that say the same thing.
Study to show yourselves approved Brothers and Sisters.
